THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF BOOKMAKING

Dates: Saturday–Sunday, June 26–27, 10 a.m.–5 p.m.
Faculty: Honore Lee
Tuition Cost: $205

This workshop will introduce students to a range of folding techniques to create multiple-page books from a single sheet of paper. After experimenting with the variety of methods to create the book structure, students will be encouraged to explore ways to alter the structure to support the book’s content. We will discuss the relationship between form and content, along with media through which to express meaning within the book form. Media will include collage, drawing, wet media, printmaking, and text. Practical, accessible tools and techniques will be discussed throughout the workshop.

HONORE LEE is a visual artist and educator from Grand Haven, Michigan, where she now resides. For 40 years, she lived in Kalamazoo, where she maintained an active studio practice while working as a Teaching Artist with the Education for the Arts Aesthetic Education Program and as adjunct faculty in the humanities department of Kalamazoo Valley Community College. Lee received her MA from Western Michigan University. Her work has been represented by numerous galleries in Michigan, including Water Street Gallery, Douglas; LaFontsee Galleries, Grand Rapids; and River Gallery, Chelsea.

Southwest Michigan Printmakers Mission Statement

Originating in the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts’ (KIA) print studio in the 1970’s the Southwest Michigan Printmakers (SWMP) was formed as a collective of regional printmakers working in a diverse range of print media.  By meeting in artist’s studios throughout the year, the collective functions as a platform for artistic support. SWMP is respected as an organization that works to promote, educate and provide exhibition opportunities for artist members working in print media throughout Southwest Michigan.

Please join us as we celebrate the fall harvest during the ANNUAL BLUE COAST ARTIST TOUR:

RED ON BLUE GALLERY will host an open house and artists' reception as part of the Blue Coast Artist Tour during the weekend of OCTOBER 5-6.

Education for the Arts is proud to partner with the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts during the Fall 2019 exhibition of “Black Refractions”.

Black Refractions and its partner exhibitions opened to an enthusiastic public on September 13 and runs through December 8.

Teaching artists and Aesthetic Education certified schools in Kalamazoo County will have the opportunity to work closely with works of art from The Studio Museum in Harlem. We conduct process-driven workshops in schools, creating activities and instruction that connect to the ideas and methods of specific works of art. Visiting the KIA and guiding the conversation with students about artist’s intention as well as content and context offers a rich opportunity for deeper understanding of the arts.
